Neck & Back Pain

Neck and back pain can be debilitating, depressing, annoying, and cause significant disruption to your day to day life, and your sleep. The severity of the pain and restriction can vary hugely person to person and establishing the pathology and cause of the problem.

Looking at the pathology, or the source of the pain, is about diagnosing what's happening locally - like a disc bulge in your lower back that's pinching the nerve. This is really important as it helps us determine what direct treatment to the lower back is going to be most effective in giving pain relief.

Establishing the cause of the pathology is where we try to work out why the disc broke down in the first place. This is an important step to help prevent further episodes of pain and provide long term pain relief.

The goal of each session once someone is out of acute pain or spasm is that treatment is targeted at the cause of the problem.

Sometimes the area that hurts isn't causing the issue - it's the victim of an underlying problem in another area. It is common, for example, that the lower back is the victim of poor alignment in the thorax (the upper back/rib cage area). If we don't address the issues in the thorax in this example and we only treat the lower back, we only put a bandaid on the problem. If we don't fix the problem it can lead to further disc and joint damage.

If we can establish what the true cause of your neck or back pain is, or what the cause of your stiffness and lack of movement lack of movement is, the treatment can be significantly more effective and efficient.

Our unique diagnostic approach allows us to look at the body holistically and assess the function and alignment of each joint and region to determine how they are impacting each other. This technique provides us with insight into how you use your body, if the muscles are switching on and off appropriately, and if there are any nerves under strain or pressure that are contributing to the symptoms you are experiencing.

In short, this technique tells the physio how to treat you to provide you with the most significant and lasting pain relief whilst restoring optimal function.

If you're wondering how often the back or neck is the victim rather than the cause of problem - it's more common that you would think. If you have tried a range of different back treatments and you have not had lasting relief then it is worth considering if your back is the victim rather than the cause.
